Rash on neck conditions occur when one’s neck is covered partially or completely with small inflammations. The rashes could be at the front of the neck or the nape. Rash on back of neck issues can vary in appearance, severity or location depending on their underlying causes. The appearance can vary; some are red while at other times they can be white, silver or purple in color. In texture, the rash on neck can be flat, bumpy or raised. They could also involve flaking, flushing, or scaling of skin cells. The rash can also appear as dots or spots and can cover a large and continuous layer.
Rash on neck is an inflammatory reaction that are a result of several factors. These include acne, an inflammatory disorder, dermatitis or a mild allergic reaction. Most rashes on the neck don’t cause any permanent damage and are treatable if one follows the instructions of a physician or skin specialist. Other times, they just disappear on their own. However, in some cases, these rashes could be a symptom of a serious underlying disease such as bacterial meningitis, a very serious disease that can be life threatening. Another serious disease that can cause neck rashes is an allergic reaction that causes one to have hives and anaphylaxis. In such a situation, a person will start wheezing while swelling in the neck, throat or mouth. This condition can be life threatening.
Several other conditions come with a rash on neck. The severity of the rash varies with the underlying disease or disorder. For example, one may experience a fever and flu-like symptoms, numbness, red or dry eyes, vomiting, sneezing or running nose, nerve pain, joint pain, if a rash is a result of an infection.
The following could be symptoms of a life-threatening condition if accompanied with a rash on neck: tightness or pain in the chest, wheezing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, light headedness or if the level of consciousness changes, a high fever accompanied with a stiff neck, a severe headache and swelling especially in the lips, mouth or throat.
Causes of Rash on Neck:
Rash on neck can be caused by a variety of diseases and conditions which include allergic reactions, auto-immune processes, infection or simply inflammations. Sensitivity to certain substances such as jewellery, medication or foodstuffs can lead to a sudden neck rash. A chronic rash might be a symptom of an inflammatory disorder.
An infection can also cause a rash to develop in the neck area. These infections include bacterial infection, viral infections such as chicken pox, shingles and measles, Folliculitis- this refers to an inflammation or infection of hair follicles, ringworms, sexual disease such as herpes, a bacterial infection of the skin.
Allergies can also cause neck rashes. These allergies include allergy to jewellery, a drug reaction such as penicillin, some people are allergic to certain foods, allergic reaction to an irritant like detergents, etc.
There are also other factors that could lead to rash on neck. These include stress, anxiety, drug abuse, dandruffs, heat, acne, and even other conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Whatever the cause of a rash on neck, one should see a skin physician in case the rash isn’t disappearing.
